Catlike Review

We received our first shipment of the Catlike Whisper Plus helmets several months ago. Since then we’ve had great feedback from our clients and we’ve had great results ourselves. So how is one helmet different from another? What's the verdict?

The Catlike helmets are very quiet. OK, how is a helmet quiet? Venting can sometimes channel air through the helmet in a way that just happens to be loud. The Catlike runs quiet, especially for a helmet with venting that works this well. This is because of the careful attention paid to air flow and efficient venting. You may not think this makes much of a difference but after a four hour ride on a windy day, the sound of the wind can get pretty annoying. This was a pleasant surprise to us as it’s not really part of the Catlike literature; we just noticed it right away. Having a helmet that is a bit quieter is all part of making your experience on the day that much better.

The venting is among the best in the world, in fact, there is an immediate noticeable difference. The number of vent holes is one thing but the air needs somewhere to go. The air is channeled directly to and out the back of the helmet very efficiently. Keeping cool saves energy, bottom line.

The fit is really nice as well. As with any helmet, the shape of the shell has to work with the shape of your head but we’ve only seen a couple people who didn’t fit the helmets. The retention mechanism is very simple and adjustable. You can raise or lower where it sits on the back of your head. They tend to sit a bit lower on most heads and have a slightly lower profile than a Giro or a Bell.

The weight of a medium helmet is a mere 265 grams. The weight of your helmet has an affect many people may not realize. Your position of the bike requires that you hold your head up while leaning forward for hours at a time. Shaving a bit of weight off your helmet can make a significant difference at the end of the day. The lighter your helmet, the less you even notice it being there.

Protection is the point after all and the Whisper+ is among the best. The Catlike helmet is designed to direct the energy of an impact outward and away from the impact point. They call this the “Crash Energy Splitter” or CES. This redirection of energy effectively reduced the impact force on your precious noggin.

All in all, Catlike’s Whisper Plus is a triumph of form and function. Great looks and functionality that is hard to beat. They come with an extra set of antimicrobial pads and a carrying case as well.

  1. You're right. It's odd that "Catlike" is the sole comment they make about its quietness. With the Giro I used to wear, it was tough to hear what my riding buddies were saying over the wind roar at our spirited pace. Not any more! The more I ride with mine, it's tough to say which is my favorite attribute, the quietness or the coolness. About the latter, I think the airflow is so good, my head is better ventilated than with no helmet at all.

    Worth every penny!

  2. Helmet noise is usually related to the straps and bits of helmet near the ear creating turbulence...not the venting.

I'd say the key features of the Catlike helmet are that it is fairly light, has good airflow, and is one of the more aero road helmets out there (supposedly 2nd behind Specialized Prevail). I find them aesthetically pleasing but the cheese grater look isn't for everyone.

  3. strap noise and the bits of material near the ear are definitely part of the equation. Good to note.
