Yes, you can! Winter riding can be fun if you are well prepared. Winter riding in the Bay Area is really like spring or fall riding anywhere else. It doesn't get all that cold and rain isn't as bad as it looks. No, we don't suggest riding during what we would cal a "storm"but you can get out there when the weather is only a bit spotty or it's only heavy mist. In this photo there are some essentials for winter riding in our area.
Assos Climajet Rain Shell: This is an extremely light, packable and breathable shell. These work amazingly well and are also available as a vest.
Assos Winter Plus Booties: Warm and dry feet are happy feet. This goes a long way when you're out in foul weather.
Assos Insulated Bib knickers/tights: Your legs may be wet but staying warm is the idea here.
Assos Early Winter Gloves: Wind Stopper fabric and a bit of insulation will keep those fingers warm and functional.
Mad Alchemy Cold Weather Embrocation: This is a warm-up aid applied to the legs before riding. It has an ingredient that stimulates blood flow and has a warming affect that lasts for hours. We've used many similar products but this stuff is far better than any of them.
Dumondetech Bio Green Chain Lube: Dumondetech makes the best lubricants we've tried. The Bio Green is great for winter because it's a little thicker and is harder to wash away than the lighter weight versions. It's also good because it is vegetable based and is easy on our environment.
Continental Grand Prix 4 Season Tires: On wet pavement you will require better traction, better puncture resistance and a more durable sidewall. These tires have it all and they still ride like a high quality racing tire. These are available in 23c, 25c, and 28c sizes.
Vittoria Open Pave: Same concept applies, better traction, and durability. These come in a 24c size and they ride really nicely.
Oakley Clear or Persimmon Lenses: Almost all Oakley sunglasses can be outfitted with a clear or lighter colored lens. They still offer the same 100% UV protection and are great for low light conditions or night riding. Protect those eyes, not just from the sun but from rocks and other debris.
Fenders: Be nice to the person riding behind you and use a fender. Keeping tire spray off yourself and those riding with you can make the day quite a bit more enjoyable.
Layering is also key, base layers, vests, arm and leg warmers are all things that can help get you out there this winter.
One thing to remember is that hydration is still very important. When it's cold and wet outside the last thing you may want is cold sports drink. Taking in Calories and electrolytes will also keep you warmer and more comfortable. You may not feel like you need it right away but stay focused on eating and drinking normally and you will be glad you did.
