Why Are We Here? Part II
Why Are We Here? Part Two:
How about fit? We know that proper fit is crucial. Proper fit improves the overall cycling experience significantly whether you are a triathlete, a century rider, a mountain biker or anything in between. Not everyone cycles for the same reasons so we can’t assume everyone needs the same fit. Beyond that, everyone has different abilities and limitations within their cycling discipline. An example of the wide range would a 23 year old yoga master who races and trains all year to a 70 year old recreational cyclist with scoliosis. With all the different variables and with everything we are learning about fit in our field, it’s amazing that year after year production bicycle companies make fewer and fewer sizes. Custom bicycles allow fit without limitation. What that means very basically is that we can fit someone perfectly and things like handling character, safety and adjustability are not compromised. In other words, we don’t need to say things like “that will work” or “it’s pretty close”. All of this relies completely on the abilities of your fitter. It’s very important for a fitter to listen to and understand what any given cyclist’s goals, needs and limitations are. Equally important is understanding bicycle design and effectively communicating all of this to the builder. Another thing to remember is that tools and gadgets do not qualify someone as a fitter. A tool is only as good as it's user. Working with an experienced fitter who has designed literally thousands of custom frames and done countless other fittings is key. Understanding how to effectively use cutting edge fitting technology like motion capture software and power analysis comes from experience. The end result should be a beautiful bike that fits perfectly, has long term adjustability, and rides like a dream. That’s why we are here.
